Following the revelations of national swimmers Joseph Schooling, Amanda Lim and Teong Tzen Wei admitting to using drugs overseas, SportSG has since suspended their support to the swimmers and imposed sanctions.
Joseph Schooling has since responded to the sanctions via an official statement, saying that he is disappointed with it: “As a national athlete, we need all-rounded support to help navigate us in our journey in all aspects of life.”
However, he added that he accepted the consequences and said that he would continue to train independently outside his NS commitments, saying “I made a mistake and I accept the consequences.”
SportSG announced on 28 September that they have suspended their support for the trio, who are under their High Performance Scheme.
The trio tested negative for controlled drugs while being investigated by CNB but admitted to consuming the drugs while they were part of TeamSG overseas.
As part of the sanctions, they will not be allowed access to SportSG facilities and services for a month with effect from 1 October, among others.
