A woman in China who was addicted to online shopping, got herself in debts of more than SGD$200,000 (1 million yuan) from shopping online, according to Xinmin Evening News.
Her father used his own savings and took loans from relatives to help his daughter pay off her debts, but she continued shopping online and borrowing money to fund her shopping sprees.
The father and daughter then got into an argument over debt repayments and he then stabbed her to death.
Earned about $600 to $800 a month
China’s Xinmin Evening News reported that the father and daughter worked as security guards for a local train station.
They were not poor but not rich either, they could afford clothes and food but nothing more.
The 30-year-old woman first got addicted to online shopping in 2019, with her family receiving a few credit card statements every few days, and receiving packages every day.
It got to a point where before they could open an older package, a new one would already be delivered and waiting at their door,
The woman, who earns about SGD$584 to SGD$778 (3,000 to 4,000 yuan), couldn’t pay her credit card debts and turned to her father to help her out, which he did by using money from his savings and borrowing from relatives.
But her shopping spree didn’t stop and she borrowed money from other relatives and even took online loans to do some more online shopping.
This resulted in her father receiving calls from her debtors.
Borrowed from loan sharks
The father then confided to his relatives that his daughter had borrowed even more money for her spending habits, and his relatives then lent him another SGD$3,898 (20,000 yuan).
On the day of his daughter’s murder, the father was drinking with a relative during dinner, who told him that his daughter may have borrowed money from loan sharks.
The man then drunkenly replied that because of their debt, he would die with his daughter.
Their relatives then lent him another SGD$5,848 (30,000 yuan) to help them with their debt, but it still wasn’t enough.
The father then went home and he saw his daughter on her phone, and they got into an argument over her debts.
He then stabbed her to death with a fruit knife, before calling the police and waiting for them to arrive at his home.
He was later sentenced to 15-year imprisonment and stripped of his political rights for 2 years, after being convicted by the Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People’s Court.
