CHINA STOPS ISSUING VISAS TO JAPAN & KOREA IN RESPONSE TO THEIR RESTRICTIONS ON CHINA

According to Reuters, China has suspended issuing short-term visas to the Japanese and South Korean citizens as part of “reciprocal measures” after the two countries imposed new travel restrictions on travellers from China due to the surge of cases in the country (China).

China reversed their zero-covid policy and reopened its borders on 8 January.

The spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, Wang Wenbin, said in a press conference on 10 January that “a handful of countries” had “disregarded science, facts and the actual pandemic situation” and took “discriminatory entry restriction measures” that “targeted China”.

He added that China “firmly rejects” these measures and will take “reciprocal measures” in response.

A notice was then released by the Chinese embassy in South Korea, announcing the suspension of visas being issued for South Koreans who plan to visit China.

They also did the same for the China embassy in Japan.
