S’PORE STUDENT ALLEGEDLY OFFERED JOHOR POLICEMAN RM90,000 BRIBE, CHARGED IN M’SIA

27-year-old Singaporean student Donovan Sia Qi Xun, and 32-year-old Law Wen Xiang, allegedly offered a police officer from the Johor Bahru Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID) a bribe of RM90,000 (or SGD$27,527), according to Channel NewsAsia.

They were charged and pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court in Johor on 17 January to one charge of offering a bribe to a police officer.

Sia, is also under investigation for cheating under Section 420 of Malaysia’s Penal Code.

The bribery incident allegedly took place on 17 October last year, in front of a restaurant in Taman Suria, Johor Bahru.

The two also pleaded not guilty to an alternative charge of giving a bribe to a person in the position to screen an offender from legal action.

Sia’s lawyer, Mohamad Isa, said that his client was a student at a Kuala Lumpur college, and his parents in Singapore were paying for his expenses.

The case had been adjourned to 19 February.
