A slew of food and beverage businesses and eateries were affected by a heavy downpour on Thursday (2 February), resulting in flooding in the area.
About 7 F&B businesses along Clementi Road were affected by the shin-high flooding and ended up having to close business for more than 2 hours.
According to Shin Min Daily News, one of the shops was completely flooded and people could be seen walking with their feet submerged in the water.
A worker from Feng Xing Fast Food Nasi Lemak, 58-year-old Mr Chen, told SMDN that they had to suspend their business for 2 hours after the flooding started at about 4pm.
He said that one of the drains was blocked and stopped the rainwater from flowing away, and added that the flood was about 10cm high.
He added that his boss alerted the Public Utilities Board (PUB) and someone was then sent down to check on the issue.
There were about 4 customers in the restaurant at the time of the flooding, and they ended up taking off their shoes and walking through the flooded restaurant barefooted.
Another worker from a Thai restaurant nearby, 36-year-old Ning, seconded Chen’s point about the drain carrying the rainwater away poorly.
Ning added that PUB would sent people down to check every few months to make sure that there is no blockage issue, which makes this incident puzzling.
Floods were also seen in different locations in Singapore, including a TikTok video that documented the flooding issue along Pandan Road.
The road markings were almost non-visible from the flood as the drivers drove across the road very slowly and carefully.
