TWO MEN ARRESTED FOR DANGEROUS DRIVING AND ILLEGAL RACING

The Traffic Police (TP) has arrested two men, aged 38 and 39, for their involvement in a case of Dangerous Driving and Illegal Racing during an operation conducted on 9 July 2017.

The two men were believed to be participating in an illegal race with their motorcars along Lim Chu Kang Road towards the direction of Jalan Bahar at a speed exceeding the road speed limit of 50km/h, at 177km/h and 179km/h respectively. Both of them were stopped and arrested by TP officers.

If convicted for the offence of taking part in an unauthorised speed trial under Section 116(7) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276, motorists shall be punished with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months and shall also be punished with a fine of not less than $1,000 and not more than $2,000 and, in the case of second or subsequent conviction, with imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months and a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $3,000. Vehicles involved in this offence may also be liable for forfeiture under Sec 117(1) of the Road Traffic Act, Chapter 276.

For the offence of dangerous driving, motorists upon conviction, shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $3,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months, or both. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, motorists shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 2 years, or both.

TP takes a stern view on such dangerous road behaviour that put the lives of other road users at risk and will continue with tough enforcement efforts to take such errant motorists to task.
