A female pedestrian who was crossing the road, narrowly escaped with her life after a rubbish truck had swerved and upended a traffic light along Ganges Avenue yesterday morning (16 April), almost hitting her.
But the woman was alert enough to have seen the rubbish truck suddenly swerving towards her, and she then quickly turned around and ran away just in time.
The Singapore Police Force said that they were alerted to the incident along the Havelock area at about 10.30 am in the morning yesterday, and nobody was injured in the accident.
A 56-year-old male driver of the truck is also assisting the police with their investigations.
A video that was captured on the dashcam of another vehicle that was nearby at the time, showed that the other vehicles were coming to a stop at the traffic light, which had turned red at the time.
The woman was seen starting to cross the road and was almost at the midpoint when the rubbish trick on the opposite side of the road, suddenly lost control and started swerving towards her.
The startled pedestrian then immediately turned around and ran back to the kerb at the side of the road for her safety.
The rubbish truck had lost control, swerved and hit the traffic light at the pedestrian crossing, upending and toppling the structure, before ultimately coming to a stop in the midst of the carnage with its hazard lights on.
Debris from the accident could be seen strewn across the road, with the traffic light fallen onto its side and pieces of the road divider uprooted and dented, lying in the middle of the road.
The rubbish truck also moved backwards from the road divider, and the video later showed a slideshow of the post-accident wreckage.
At the time of writing, police investigations are ongoing.
