A video was previously shared on 21 April showing a man trying to put out a fire with a crowbar, with netizens laughing at the man for literally “fighting” the fire.
A fire had broken out inside a locked BMW that was barked on the road side along Desker Road on 13 April.
The man in the video, Mr Lin Yufeng, spoke to Shin Min Daily News to clear the air and explained the reasons for why he did what he did.
The 37-year-old man explained that the locked BMW that was on fire actually belonged to his business partner, and that he was inside his shop at Desker Road at the time when the fire broke out inside the locked car that was parked just outside his shop.
Lin was worried that the car might explode, and he then picked up a crowbar from inside his shop and proceeded to smash the windshield of the car.
His business partner, the owner of the car, then put out the fire using a fire extinguisher.
The incident took place on 13 April at about 1.45 am in the morning, and the Singapore Civil Defence Force said then that “members of the public extinguished the fire using a dry powder extinguisher prior to (the firefighters’) arrival”.
Lin added that when he saw the comments that mocked and made fun of him for fighting the fire with a “stick”, he said that he was angry about it because he wasn’t panicking at the time.
He also tried to explain the reasons for his actions on his personal Facebook page.
His business partner, 26-year-old Lin Yisheng, told SMDN that the car in the incident was a second hand BMW that he had bought just 8 months before the incident.
At the time of writing, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
