Recently, I encountered an unsettling experience when I received a call on my landline from an individual claiming to be from Singtel’s technical department. This encounter left me questioning the authenticity of the caller’s intentions and the legitimacy of their claims.
The call began with a person speaking in a strong Indian accent, asserting that there had been suspicious internet activity originating from my broadband connection in the past few days. What struck me as odd was the absence of an automated voice message typically associated with official calls.
Instead, it was a direct conversation that suffered from frequent interruptions and disconnections, making it difficult to maintain clear communication.
During the conversation, the individual requested specific information, such as the number of residents in my house, and urged me to close my laptop. However, due to the unclear and fragmented nature of the call, I remained skeptical and focused on obtaining more concrete details.
I then told him “F SPIDER, MAI KAO PEH LAH”
My primary concern was to ascertain the legitimacy of the call, so I requested the caller’s phone number and name.
To verify the authenticity of the situation, I promptly contacted Singtel’s technical support at 1688. Upon speaking with a representative, I inquired about any recent calls made by their department to my landline.
