On June 30, 2023, a disturbing incident took place at the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) Headquarters located along Clementi Road.
An 18-year-old Malaysian man, who is reportedly working as a cleaner there, allegedly stabbed another man in the neck with a pair of scissors. The assault occurred around 12:12 pm, attracting attention and concern.
According to an Instagram user, the stabbing incident happened in close proximity to an ongoing event, and the campus was heavily patrolled by auxiliary police officers, indicating a swift response to the situation.
The suspect, identified as Thevendran Rao Rejendran, a Malaysian national, was brought before the court on July 1, 2023.
He was charged with one count of voluntarily causing harm using a dangerous weapon. Investigators believe that the weapon used in the attack was a pair of scissors.
It was revealed that both the suspect and the victim are colleagues working as cleaners, according to court documents.
During the court proceedings, the prosecuting officer requested additional time for the police to conclude their investigations and gather the victim’s medical reports from the hospital.
If Thevendran is proven guilty, he may face severe consequences, including a maximum prison sentence of up to 7 years, a monetary fine, caning, or a combination of these penalties.
The incident has sparked concerns and garnered attention on social media platforms. Images shared on Facebook and Instagram by users show the gravity of the situation and its impact on the community.
Instagram user @yinzjoee posted a photo on 30 June onto his Instagram stories, sharing that there had been a “lunch time slashing today at SIM”.
He added that it was “unfortunate for the incident but fortunate that there was an AETOS promotion event ongoing at that time and the place had been crawling with auxiliary police”, which resulted in the officers swiftly attending to the situation.
