CUSTOMER PAID $100 FOR $9.60 TAXI RIDE, THANKS DRIVER FOR PLAYING OLD SONGS

On a regular day, a ComfortDelGro taxi driver in Singapore, Ann Wong had the pleasure of driving an elderly Indonesian Chinese couple on July 12. In an attempt to create a pleasant atmosphere, Wong decided to play some classic Chinese tunes during the ride.

Among the songs that he played in the taxi were classic hits like “My Choice” by George Lam and Sally Yeh (選擇), “As Long As You’re Better Off” by Kenny Bee (只要你过得比我好), “Cut My Heart” by Jacky Cheung (心如刀割), “Goodbye Kiss” by Jacky Cheung (吻別).

To Wong’s delight, the elderly couple appreciated the nostalgic playlist and started to engage in conversation about the songs. They even sang along to some of the tunes together, reminiscing about the good old days when these songs were popular.

As the ride came to an end, the wife handed the taxi driver a S$100 note for her taxi fare, which amounted to about $9.60.

However, Wong politely expressed his concern about not having change for such a large denomination. He asked if they had a S$10 note instead, trying to ensure he could provide the correct change.

In response, the wife insisted that the S$100 note was intended as a gift for Wong. She thanked him for playing “the wonderful songs” and explained that the music had brought back cherished memories from their youth.

The heartwarming encounter between the ComfortDelGro taxi driver and the elderly couple exemplifies the power of music to create connections and bring joy to people’s lives. Beyond just a ride, it became a shared experience that touched the hearts of all involved.

Me: Auntie, this is a $100.00 note. I have no changes, do you have a $10.00?

Auntie: yes, I know, the $100.00 is for you.

Me: Thank you so much.

Auntie: Thank you for playing the wonderful songs. It bring back our memories when we are young.
