An ordinary afternoon along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 took a terrifying turn as a moving steel decking, hoisted by an excavator, collided with a car on August 2nd, sparking online discussions as to who was the one at fault in the accident.
The video footage captured and shared by SG Road Vigilante on Facebook paints a distressing picture. A black Toyota Raize is seen defying a ‘Stop’ sign being held by a vigilant construction worker, even as a silver car had earlier committed the same infraction.
Behind a line of barricades, an excavator was engaged in hoisting a substantial metal decking. The intention was innocent – to transport the load to another location.
However, as the metal behemoth began its ascent, disaster struck. The decking swung at a height equal to a car’s roof, breaching the barricaded safety zone and being lifted over the open roads.
The ill-fated black Toyota, after passing the worker holding the ‘Stop’ sign, ventured into the lane adjacent to the barricades.
Tragedy struck as the moving steel decking collided with the car’s roof, “chopping” into the car’s windows and emitting a jarring thud that echoed through the surroundings.
The force of the impact was enough to snap the metal wires securing the load, creating a cacophony of sound that included alarmed shouts and blaring car horns.
The collision set off a chaotic sequence of events. The metal load swung wildly, wreaking havoc on the barricades and posing a grave threat to a construction worker who narrowly escaped its path.
Netizens’ comments
- The silver car lucky go in and pass before the steel deck swing out… if only they had shift the barriers to include swing path…
- Ignore Stop sign like ignore stop line at crossings.
Serve you right - Worker closed 1 lane only and driver did not see the steel plate thin side profile. Both parties contributed to the near miss.
- Both wrong lor. Should use this video for training purpose. Construction worker should have place additional cones along the path of the steel decking that is being hosted. This will stop any cars from cutting in after the temporary stop sign.
- Worker already put up stop sign and u still proceeded. Well deserved.
