Despite the valiant efforts of fellow hawkers, Liu eventually succumbed to his injuries. The Man Behind the Hawker Stall
Liu Youcai was more than just a hawker; he was a beloved figure in Kuala Kangsar. Clad in a simple singlet vest and slippers, he stood out for his unassuming demeanor and dedication to his work. His stall was famous for its mouthwatering RM6.50 (S$1.90) fried chicken chop and rice, a favorite among locals. For two decades, he tirelessly served these delectable dishes, becoming an integral part of the community’s culinary landscape.
The Fateful Day
On that fateful day in September, as the clock struck 1 pm, Liu was in the midst of frying his signature fried chicken cutlet and crispy fries. Suddenly, he collapsed, falling headlong into a searing wok filled with scalding hot oil. A bystander, who was helping out at Liu’s stall, quickly alerted other hawkers for assistance. Together, they managed to pull Liu from the perilous situation.
A Community’s Effort
Liu was still alive and breathing when the ambulance rushed him to the hospital. However, the extent of his injuries was severe, with second-degree burns covering his face, chest, and back, along with smoke inhalation. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Liu passed away less than 1.5 hours later, leaving behind a void that could never be filled.
The Health Struggles
Liu’s older brother revealed that he had struggled with high blood pressure and high cholesterol, often experiencing dizzy spells. Concerned for his brother’s well-being, he had advised Liu to take better care of his health. However, Liu, a workaholic dedicated to his stall’s success, had little time to spare for self-care.
A Man of Dedication
Liu’s dedication was evident in his work ethic. He worked six days a week, and even on his day off, he returned to his stall to prepare ingredients. His stall opened at 8 am, and on good days, the food would sell out as early as 1 pm, a testament to his culinary prowess and the trust the community had in his cooking.
A Heart for Animals
Beyond his culinary skills, Liu was known for his love for animals. At home, he cared for 11 dogs, providing them with love and shelter.
