It eventually escalated to a knife attack, with the victim suffering a 5cm cut on his right arm, according to TODAY.

38-year-old Sim Wei Jie pleaded guilty to voluntarily causing hurt, and was sentenced to 7 months imprisonment on 16 October, as well as an additional penalty of 72 days imprisonment for committing the offence while under a remission order from prison.

What happened?

On January 2 of this year, 38-year-old Sim Wei Jie was working as a food delivery rider when he crossed paths with 37-year-old Mr. Lim Yee Seng, a fellow food delivery rider, in the Ang Mo Kio area.

Lim thought that Sim was following him for some reason, although the exact reason for Mr. Lim’s suspicion that Sim was following him remains unclear.

Nevertheless, when Mr. Lim noticed Sim on his electric bicycle, he decided to confront Sim and asked him why was he following him.

Sim vehemently denied following Mr. Lim and offered to have a one-on-one conversation if there were any issues bothering Mr. Lim.

In an attempt to clear the air, both individuals walked to Block 322 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3. It was there that Mr. Lim realized he had misunderstood Sim’s intentions and decided to move on with his food deliveries.

Sim, on the other hand, had a different plan in mind.

A Dangerous Decision

Sim went back home, retrieved a small kitchen knife, and concealed it in his sling bag. He then set out in search of Mr. Lim, who had no idea about the impending danger.

After collecting a food order, Mr. Lim spotted Sim waiting near his electric bicycle, and they returned to Block 322 for another conversation.

Sim insisted that Mr. Lim apologize for the misunderstanding. The choice of returning to Block 322 was not coincidental; Sim was aware that this location lacked closed-circuit television cameras, making it an ideal setting for confrontation.

A Violent Turn of Events

When Mr. Lim refused to apologize, Sim’s frustration boiled over. He swung the knife at Mr. Lim, attempting to strike him not once, but twice.

The first swing missed but the second swing resulted in a 5cm-deep cut on Mr. Lim’s right forearm. Realizing the severity of his actions, Sim fled the scene but returned after about 10 minutes to warn Mr. Lim not to involve the police.

After Sim’s second departure, Mr. Lim contacted an ambulance, and he was swiftly transported to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

Mr. Lim underwent surgery and was subsequently granted 14 days of hospitalization leave upon his discharge.

The knife used in the attack was never recovered by the police, as Sim admitted to discarding it in a pond at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park.

Legal Consequences

Sim Wei Jie’s actions led to serious legal repercussions. He was sentenced to seven months’ jail after pleading guilty to voluntarily causing hurt. In addition to this, he received an extra penalty of 72 days’ jail because he had committed the offense while under a remission order from prison. This incident highlights the seriousness of the matter, and the court deemed it fit to impose a harsh punishment.
