Deepavali Celebrations in Little India

To accommodate the influx of visitors during the Deepavali celebrations, the police have issued a traffic advisory, according to The Straits Times.

The Serangoon Road, where most of the festivities occur, is expected to experience heavy traffic, especially on the eve of Deepavali, which falls on November 11th.

To avoid congestion, motorists are strongly advised to explore alternative routes and exercise caution while driving in the vicinity.

Pedestrian Crossings

In a bid to efficiently manage the crowd and traffic, certain pedestrian crossings will be temporarily closed. The Birch Road pedestrian crossings in front of Anguilla Mosque will be closed from 4 pm on November 11th to 4 am on November 12th.

Similarly, the crossing in Campbell Lane may be closed if deemed necessary. Signages will guide pedestrians to the nearest available crossings, and auxiliary police officers will be present to assist and regulate traffic, ensuring the safety of pedestrians and motorists alike.

Liquor Control Zone

Little India, along with Geylang, is designated as a Liquor Control Zone. During the Deepavali weekend, the police have imposed restrictions on public drinking within these zones. From 10.30 pm on November 10th to 7 am on November 14th, public drinking is strictly prohibited.

Those caught drinking in the Liquor Control Zones during the restricted hours can face fines of up to $1,500. Repeat offenders may be subject to fines of up to $3,000 or a jail term of up to 4½ months, or both. Additionally, retailers who sell liquor beyond the permitted hours risk having their licenses revoked.

Fireworks and Sparkler Safety

The police have also issued warnings against setting off improvised explosive devices constructed using sparklers and the illegal possession and discharge of fireworks.

Both actions can result in severe legal consequences, including fines, jail terms, or a combination of both.
