WOMAN FORGED MCs TO SCAM INSURANCE COMPANY INTO PAYING HER $40K, JAILED

In the realm of insurance, trust is the cornerstone. However, the case of Hairina Mohamed Rafik, a 37-year-old Singaporean, has brought to light a disconcerting breach of that trust.

For a period spanning two years, Hairina manipulated medical certificates to orchestrate a series of fraudulent claims, successfully conning AIA Singapore into paying out $41,400 in total, according to TODAY.

The Web of Deception Unveiled

Hairina’s scheme began in mid-2019 when she visited Raffles Hospital for a burn injury. Little did the hospital know that the medical certificates issued for her and her husband would become tools of deception.

In a plot twist involving technology, Hairina scanned her husband’s medical certificates and digitally altered the details, paving the way for her insurance fraud.

Submitting the falsified documents to AIA in September, Hairina secured a hefty payout of almost S$18,500. The success of this endeavor only fueled her audacity.

December of the same year saw Hairina extending a one-day MC from Singapore General Hospital to 20 days, extracting over S$10,200 from AIA.

In March 2021, Hairina’s audacious attempt to forge claims for a hand injury from hot cooking oil marked a turning point in her deceitful endeavors.

Undeterred by the lack of an actual medical visit, Hairina crafted false medical certificates and a memo, all in an attempt to swindle the insurance company.

AIA, vigilant and thorough, probed into the dubious claims, unearthing the anomalies that led to the exposure of Hairina’s fraudulent activities.

Legal consequences

Facing the consequences of her actions, Hairina pled guilty to two counts of cheating and one of attempting to cheat, resulting in a six-month jail sentence.

Hairina has also since made full restitution to the company.
