It was an average Wednesday night. I was working my shift at the pub. I had been working there for about three months, and it had been a great job. I was just starting to get to know the regulars, and the regulars were starting to get to know me.
That night, a woman and her daughter walked in. It was obvious that they weren’t regulars, but they seemed like nice people. I figured they were just stopping in for a quick drink before they went on their way.
Little did I know, they were about to change my life forever.
The mother and daughter ordered their drinks and I went about my business. As I was getting them their drinks, I heard the daughter say something about her mother’s past. She said something about her mother used to work in a pub. She said something about how her mother was a wild one back in the day.
I was immediately interested. I asked the daughter if her mother had ever worked at this pub. She said yes, and I was shocked. I asked her more questions about her mother’s past. She said that her mother had been a wild one in her younger days, and she used to make out with the customers at the pub.
At that moment, it all clicked. The woman I had just served drinks to was my mother-in-law. And she used to make out with customers at the pub.
I was speechless. I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know how to feel. I didn’t know how my wife would react.
After a few moments of shock, I managed to find my voice. I asked my mother-in-law if it was true. She admitted that it was, and she apologized for not telling me sooner. She said she hadn’t wanted to embarrass me or my wife.
I thanked her for her honesty and said that I appreciated it. I told her that I wasn’t mad at her, and that I understood why she hadn’t told me.
After that night, things between my mother-in-law and I changed. We were more open and honest with each other. We could talk about anything, including her past. We even joked about it sometimes.
It was a strange situation, but it was also kind of funny. I was glad that I was able to look past it, and I’m glad that we could move past it and still be in each other’s lives.
My mother-in-law and I are still close today. We still joke about her past, and I’m thankful that we can. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come and how strong our relationship is.
