S’PORE EMPLOYER REFUSE TO GIVE MAID A BED, MAKE HER SLEEP WITH THEIR DOG INSTEAD

In a popular Facebook group dedicated to Foreign Domestic Workers (FDWs), a maid ignited a discussion by posing a unique question about her living conditions. The post sparked a mixed reaction within the group, with some expressing concerns about hygiene, personal space, and cultural differences, while others showcased their affection for dogs and willingness to share their sleeping space with their employer’s furry companions.

The Maid’s Unusual Sleeping Arrangement

The maid’s post in the MDW in Singapore Facebook group presented a scenario that might be considered unusual by some. Sharing details of her daily routine, she asked, “As an FDW, will you agree to sleep with your employer’s dogs? (meaning – same mattress, pillow, blanket?)”

Concerns Raised by Some Members

Upon reading the post, several group members raised valid concerns. Hygiene emerged as a prominent issue, with worries about the cleanliness of sharing sleeping quarters with animals. Personal space and cultural differences were also cited as reasons why some FDWs might prefer not to sleep in close proximity to dogs.

In contrast to the reservations expressed by some members, a significant portion of the group displayed a strong affinity for dogs. Many FDWs shared their love for these furry companions, considering them an integral part of their employer’s family. For these helpers, the prospect of sharing a bed with the employer’s dogs was met with enthusiasm and a sense of camaraderie.

The diverse responses highlighted the cultural sensitivity and individual preferences among FDWs. While some cultures may view sharing sleeping space with pets as commonplace, others might find it unconventional and downright degrading.

The discussion underscored the importance of recognizing and respecting these cultural nuances within the diverse community of domestic helpers in Singapore.

  1. me sometimes i bring the dog to my room and we slept together in my bed. if youre a pet lover too, its not an issue but its up to you if u want to sleep with the dog or not,, if not, just tell your employer that youre not comfortable to sleep with the pet
  2. You actually don’t need others opinion about this. If you feel like it, do so. If not, then feel free to say no. What matters most is you standing on your ground. it is only you who can decide for yourself.
  3. For me is a big no..
  4. Even i am a pet lover, big no to sleep the same bed with the dog..because no matter what u clean the dog, still dirty and also i can’t sleep if there something keep on moving next to me.
