Local celebrity chef, Chef Bob, embarked on a culinary adventure during his recent trip to London, where he patronised an Old Chang Kee outlet there to buy some snacks. However, to say the prices there are a little steep, would be a massive understatement.
Known for his quirky on-screen persona, Chef Bob added a touch of amusement to his London escapade. Aiming to warm himself in the unfriendly London weather, he sought out the comforting flavors of Old Chang Kee’s iconic snacks.
He shared a video of his culinary find on his TikTok page, Chef Bob.
A Pricey Pleasure: The Shocking Cost of a Sardine Puff
The video begins with Chef Bob wearing a beanie and a thick jacket with gloves as he wandered around the cold streets of London, as he went exploring and looking for some “grub”.
The scene then changes to a shot of a familiar sight, Singapore’s Old Chang Kee, complete with the familiar yellow colours on the walls, as Chef Bob breaks out into laughter in disbelief.
A quick look at the menu prices showed that a Beef Rendang Puff was priced at £4.50, while the Sardine Puffs and Spicy Chicken Mala Puffs costs a little cheaper at £4.25.
In comparison, a sardine puff in Singapore would set him back about $2.
Further down the menu showed other similar puffs like the Signature Chicken Curry Puff being priced at $4 for one and $7.50 for two, while the Vegetarian Curry Potato Puffs were priced at #3.80 for one and $7.50 for two.
Chef Bob ultimately made his choice and bought a Sardine Puff for £4.25, which comes around to about SGD$7, as he laughs before taking a bite.
He then explained that “sometimes when you’re abroad, you look for our local food. And Sardine Puff, Sardine Curry Pugg, Sardine Epok Epok, at this kind ofweather, you see? Perfect combination.”
Chef Bob then added that Old Chang Kee was flying our Singapore flag high in London, which he is “super proud” of.
