In a disturbing incident at a fan event for the popular mobile game Genshin Impact, a 41-year-old man, Wee Hong Ee, has been sentenced to five weeks’ jail on 25 January for using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a cosplayer.
Wee, who pleaded guilty to the charge, unzipped his jeans, touched himself, and rubbed his exposed genitals against an unsuspecting female cosplayer, according to TODAY.
The Disturbing Incident
The incident occurred on October 30, 2022, at the Suntec Convention Centre during a fan event for Genshin Impact. Wee was present with his wife and one-year-old son. Seizing the opportunity while his family was away, he engaged in indecent behavior by touching himself in a crowded public setting.
As part of his inappropriate actions, Wee targeted a female cosplayer, closely following her. Unaware of his lewd intentions, the cosplayer initially dismissed the contact, attributing it to the crowded surroundings and the nature of cosplay costumes. However, Wee’s behavior escalated when he rubbed his exposed private parts against the victim’s backside.
Discovery and Legal Proceedings
The witness, a friend of the cosplayer, noticed Wee’s indecent act and promptly reported the incident to the event organizer. The police were involved, and Wee was arrested about three months later on January 27, 2023. The court considered a similar charge and another charge of doing an obscene act in a public place during the sentencing process.
During sentencing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Delicia Tan sought a jail term of four to eight weeks, emphasizing that Wee exposed himself in a crowded public setting. Despite Wee’s early plea, District Judge Terence Tay took into account aggravating factors, including the location of the offense.
“In a crowded place, it is highly possible that offensive self-gratification may not even be detected, and even if detected, the chances are low due to the crowd situation,” remarked Judge Tay.
Remorse and Apology
Wee’s defense counsel, Jared Lee, expressed Wee’s remorse over the incident, highlighting his commitment to turning over a new leaf and setting a positive example. Wee apologized for the distress caused to his wife, child, and the victim. Despite the remorse, the court emphasized the severity of the offense and the need for a deterrent sentence.
