I work at a company (not an small SMC, SGX listed Singaporean MNC) where the workforce is at least 80% Malaysian Chinese. And they all only speak in Chinese. Not just for social interactions, but meetings and technical discussions have been conducted in Chinese.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so how did you deal with it?
Would reporting it to TAFEP/MOM help?

- Just ask them to speak in english if you are present in the meeting. Anyone in right mind would have used English then. After you asked long enough they will be conscious of your existence and will speak English.
- There should be a whistleblowing policy in the company. If not, then mom or tafep, especially if they are a minority and this is forcing them to quit because they can’t do their work if the company insists on speaking in Chinese in work meetings.
- i am not sure why so many ppl on this thread are so dismissive of your situation and asking you to “suck it up”. Dont blindly listen to them as “sucking it up” may harm your work productivity and mental health down the road without addressing the issue. So ironic when Sg is a multiracial country with English as the main working language but there r so many bigots here with such a narrow mind.
- Never say dont understand haha say TOTALLY SWITCH OFF once the diff language starts. Even then, tons of excuses. Sorry thought yall chit chatting about daily life, sorry since yall speaking in another language thought I don’t need to be involved. You can come up with many excuses that dodge the don’t understand why don’t you ask when it’s another language. If it’s same language but u don’t understand and don’t clarify then you’ll be in trouble
