LORRY CAUGHT AT TUAS WITH 2670 CARTONS OF CONTRABAND CIGARETTES

On January 23, 2024, officers from the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) at Tuas Checkpoint successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle untaxed cigarettes into Singapore. The Malaysia-registered lorry in question was subjected to thorough checks after anomalies were discovered in the scanned images. Upon further investigation, it was found that boxes of untaxed cigarettes were hidden within a consignment of “Used Personal Effects of Furniture” and wooden cupboards. In total, 2,670 cartons of untaxed cigarettes were discovered.

The case has since been handed over to Singapore Customs for further investigation. As the protectors of Singapore’s borders, ICA remains dedicated to facilitating trade and safe travel while ensuring the security and safety of the nation’s borders.

In a similar incident, ICA officers at Woodlands Checkpoint detected and seized 1,200 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes on January 15, 2024. The cigarettes were found in a Malaysia-registered lorry that was transporting a consignment of “Household Appliances”. The case was also referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation.

These incidents serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat smuggling activities at Singapore’s borders. ICA remains vigilant in its mission to protect the nation and uphold the law, and will continue to work closely with other relevant agencies to ensure the security and integrity of Singapore’s borders.
