The police announced on Wednesday that the driver will be charged under the Road Traffic Act for dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing hurt, dangerous driving, and failing to stop after an accident.

The accident, which occurred at the junction of Tampines Avenue 1 and Avenue 4 on Monday morning, involved a total of six vehicles, including four cars, a van, and a minibus. Dashcam footage captured the driver of the black Saab speeding and sideswiping a white car before the junction, leading to a chain reaction of collisions that left multiple vehicles damaged, including a black car that overturned.

The police are still investigating the incident to determine if there were any other potential offences committed. If found guilty, the driver faces severe penalties, including a jail term of between two and eight years for dangerous driving causing death, and a fine of up to S$10,000, or jail for up to two years, or both, for dangerous driving causing hurt. Additionally, he may be disqualified from driving all classes of vehicles.

For the offence of dangerous driving, the driver may be fined up to S$5,000, imprisoned for up to 12 months, or both. Failing to stop after an accident carries a fine of up to S$1,000, or an imprisonment term of up to three months, or both.

In light of the incident, the driver’s licence has been suspended pending the outcome of the court proceedings. The accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads, reported CNA.

As the investigation continues, the authorities will likely be examining the circumstances leading up to the accident, including the driver’s speed and behavior behind the wheel. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, and it is hoped that the outcome of the court proceedings will bring some measure of closure to the families of the victims.
