A knife attack occurred on the Taichung Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) today (May 21), with multiple passengers attempting to restrain the suspect, leading to a scuffle. At least four individuals were injured, including the suspect, with the police arriving at the scene to handle the situation. The Taichung city government station has temporarily suspended operations.
The incident took place at 11:20 am today, when a passenger wielding a knife began attacking others inside a train car at the Taichung West District, Taichung City Government station. Amidst chaos and screams, passengers managed to subdue the suspect, while others quickly exited the train. The MRT company halted the train at the station.
Police arrived at the scene to manage the situation. Taichung City Police Commissioner Li Filong stated that the suspect has been arrested, with at least four injuries reported. The investigation is ongoing to determine if the attack was random or due to other reasons.
The Taichung City Police Department’s Sixth Division reported that the injured have been sent to Linxi Hospital for treatment. According to TVBS News, a witness stated that several brave young passengers in the last car heard people shouting to escape. They used umbrellas and their bare hands to restrain the suspect, confronting him until they reached the city government station. Another individual in olive green clothing, covered in blood, was seen waiting for an ambulance after exiting the MRT.
DPP councilor Shi Zhichang inquired about the situation, and Mayor Lu Xiuyan responded that the first priority is to attend to the injured passengers. The police are investigating the cause of the attack.
Li Filong also clarified the situation, stating that the suspect has been arrested, with at least four injuries reported. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause.
Currently, the Taichung MRT operates between the Fengchong Station and the City Government Station in both directions.
