Upon arrival, police discovered that the main gate of the unit had been vandalized with red paint, and a debtor’s note was left outside, indicating harassment linked to loansharking. The swift response of the police, combined with follow-up investigations and surveillance footage from police cameras, enabled officers from the Jurong Police Division to identify the suspect. He was arrested the following day.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the man may be connected to other similar loanshark harassment incidents across the island, raising concerns about the extent of such activities in the community.

The suspect is scheduled to face charges in court on November 29, 2024, under the Moneylenders Act of 2008. For first-time offenders, the penalties for loanshark harassment can be severe, ranging from fines between $5,000 and $50,000, imprisonment for up to five years, and caning of up to six strokes.

The police have reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards loanshark harassment, emphasizing that individuals who engage in vandalism, create disturbances, or threaten public safety will face stringent legal consequences.
