A 62-year-old man, identified by the surname Wang, experienced a frightening incident while playing pickleball with friends at a condominium complex in Telok Blangah on the evening of June 11. During their game, a palm-sized rock was reportedly thrown from a building approximately five floors above, narrowly missing one of Wang’s friends.
Incident Details
According to reports from Shin Min Daily News, the rock was thrown from a height and almost struck Wang’s friend, prompting immediate concern. Despite a warning from Wang’s friend to the alleged perpetrator that they were visible, two additional smaller rocks were subsequently thrown from the same building.
Wang and his friends, who are part of a 14-member pickleball group, decided to lodge a police report the following day to address the alarming behavior. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that they are investigating the matter after receiving the report.
Background of the Pickleball Group
Wang’s pickleball group typically meets at The Interlace condominium, where six of the members are residents. They regularly play on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, with sessions lasting three hours on Mondays and Wednesdays, and two hours on Thursdays. On the day of the incident, the group had reserved the pickleball court from 6 pm to 8 pm, following proper procedures with the condominium management.
However, upon their arrival, they found a dozen children aged between six to twelve playing basketball and cricket on the court. After asking the children to leave, the group began their pickleball session, only to be interrupted by the rock-throwing incident.
Ongoing Investigation
Wang speculated that the rocks were thrown from a linked walkway between the blocks, where he and his friends noticed four to five children. Despite the unsettling experience, Wang stated that he and his friends continued their game until around 8 pm and expressed their intention to keep playing at the same location in the future.
The management of The Interlace has acknowledged the incident but declined to provide further details, citing an ongoing investigation.
Conclusion
This incident raises concerns about safety in communal spaces and the behavior of individuals in residential areas. As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial for the condominium management and local authorities to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors, fostering a secure environment for recreational activities. Wang and his friends’ commitment to continuing their pickleball sessions reflects their resilience, but it also highlights the need for vigilance in shared spaces.
