On Sunday, June 15, 2025, a 42-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound while cycling in a forested area adjacent to a live-firing activity conducted by the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). The incident occurred around 11:40 AM in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, specifically between Upper Seletar Reservoir and Upper Peirce Reservoir.
Details of the Incident
According to CNA, the police were alerted to the situation by the National University Hospital (NUH) at approximately 11:55 PM on the same day. According to police reports, a bullet slug was lodged in the man’s left lower back. Fortunately, the injury is not life-threatening, and the man is currently in stable condition following surgery to remove the bullet.
The victim was cycling with friends when the incident occurred, and they promptly transported him to the hospital for medical attention.
Safety Regulations and Investigations
Authorities emphasised that the area where the incident took place is restricted to the public, with clear signage warning against unauthorised entry into live-firing zones. Preliminary investigations revealed that the SAF was conducting a live-firing activity at the Nee Soon Range at the time of the incident, approximately 2.3 kilometres away from where the man was injured.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) confirmed that the incident occurred within a forested area designated for SAF live-firing. In response to the incident, live-firing activities at the Nee Soon 500m Range have been suspended as a precautionary measure.
Ongoing Investigations
The SAF is collaborating with the police and other relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. At this stage, police do not suspect foul play. Under the Military Manoeuvres Act, unauthorised individuals are prohibited from entering areas designated for SAF live-firing to ensure their safety.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging the public to adhere to safety regulations and respect restricted areas to prevent similar incidents in the future.
