In a remarkable decision, a man from China has opted to leave behind his urban job to embrace a life of solitude in a cave, declaring that marriage is a “waste of time.” Min Hengcai, who previously worked as an e-hailing driver earning around RMB10,000 (approximately S$1,784) monthly, found the routine of his work unfulfilling and sought a simpler, more tranquil existence.
Embracing a Hermit Lifestyle
Min’s choice to quit his job stemmed from the repetitive nature of his daily grind, which he deemed meaningless. He was also weighed down by debts owed to family members, which took a significant toll on his earnings. Despite his current lifestyle as a hermit, Min still carries a debt of RMB300,000 (around S$53,527), which he has come to accept he may never repay, especially after his relatives sold his properties to settle some of his financial obligations.
To facilitate his new way of living, Min spent approximately RMB40,000 (around S$7,137) to transform a 50-square-metre cave into his home. He traded his land for a smaller plot owned by another villager, allowing him to create a space he now refers to as his “black hole,” or his entire universe.
