The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) confirmed that the fire broke out around 1:50 PM. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported among the BMTC staff or trainees. Eyewitness accounts and a video shared on TikTok depicted the aftermath of the fire, showing thick black smoke filling the room. The footage also captured a soldier in uniform actively dousing the area with a water hose, while bunk mattresses were seen tilted to one side.

The caption accompanying the video read, “Tekong Viper coy bunk burn down,” although the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Prompt Response from BMTC Staff

According to Mindef, the fire alarm was activated at 1:51 PM, prompting BMTC personnel to respond immediately. They detected smoke and took action to extinguish the fire before the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) arrived on the scene. The SAF is currently collaborating with the SCDF to investigate the incident further.

Mindef emphasised their commitment to maintaining high fire safety standards to ensure the well-being of all service personnel. They have stated that further comments will be withheld as investigations are still ongoing.

This incident follows a previous fire in January 2024, where 13 individuals were evacuated from an offshore fish farm near Pulau Tekong due to a generator fire. Thankfully, that incident also resulted in no injuries.

Ongoing Investigations and Safety Measures

The SAF’s proactive approach to fire safety is crucial, especially in training environments where personnel are often in close quarters. The swift action taken by BMTC staff in this recent incident highlights the importance of preparedness and quick response in emergency situations.

As investigations continue, the SAF and Mindef are expected to release more information regarding the cause of the fire and any potential safety measures that may be implemented to prevent future occurrences. The commitment to ensuring a safe training environment remains a top priority for the Ministry of Defence.

In conclusion, while the fire at the BMTC was contained without any injuries, it serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety protocols within military training facilities. The ongoing investigation will hopefully provide clarity on the incident and reinforce the measures necessary to protect personnel in the future.
