30 Y.O NSman dies after collapsing outside Maju Camp

A 30-year-old operationally ready National Serviceman tragically died after collapsing just outside Maju Camp on 30 June 2025, shortly after completing his National Service Fitness Improvement Training (NS FIT) session. The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) confirmed the incident in a statement released today.

According to Mindef, the NSman had participated in the NS FIT session held from 6.50pm to 8pm at the Maju Fitness Conditioning Centre. After the session, he informed the fitness instructors that he felt fine and was cleared to leave the facility. He booked out of camp at 8.11pm.

Passerby Witnesses Collapse, Calls for Help

Moments after exiting Maju Camp, a passerby witnessed the NSman collapse along the roadside and immediately called for emergency assistance. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted at 8.16pm, and an ambulance arrived swiftly at 8.25pm.

Resuscitation efforts were administered at the scene before the NSman was transported to National University Hospital, arriving around 9pm. Despite continued life-saving efforts by hospital staff, he was pronounced dead at 9.54pm.

SAF Implements Safety Pause for NS FIT

In light of the incident, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) announced a temporary safety pause on all NS FIT sessions until 4 July 2025. This suspension is to allow a thorough review of existing safety procedures and protocols, and to remind all servicemen of the importance of prioritising personal health and safety during physical training.

Mindef said in its statement: “The SAF is rendering support to the family in their time of grief. We extend our deepest condolences to the family.”

Reminders on Safety During Training

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance regarding health during intensive physical activity, especially for operationally ready National Servicemen balancing work, family, and national service obligations. Servicemen are encouraged to report any signs of discomfort before, during, or after training sessions and to seek medical attention immediately if they feel unwell.

NS FIT, which is part of Singapore’s efforts to help NSmen meet their Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) requirements, includes structured sessions aimed at improving physical fitness. While safety protocols are in place, this tragic event has prompted the SAF to review them to further minimise risks during training.
