A night market turned into a scene of horror late Friday night when a 66-year-old female stallholder was fatally struck by a rental car at Block 52A Circuit Road. The woman died on the spot, while the driver reportedly fled the scene without offering any help.

Fatal Crash at Circuit Road

According to a police statement, the incident occurred around 11.45pm on 11 July 2025. The car involved, a rental vehicle, allegedly ploughed into the victim who was working at the pasar malam. Despite the emergency response, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

The case has since sparked public outrage, especially after it was revealed that the driver did not have a valid driving licence and was driving uninsured.

Suspect Caught Within 15 Hours

The Singapore Police Force confirmed the arrest of two men in connection with the case. The 40-year-old driver, who was not licensed to drive and lacked valid insurance, was tracked down within 15 hours of the fatal collision. The breakthrough came after extensive ground inquiries and the analysis of CCTV footage from the area.

Investigators also arrested a 38-year-old man who had rented the car and was riding as the front passenger. He is believed to have knowingly allowed the unlicensed driver to operate the vehicle.

Facing a Long List of Charges

According to the Traffic Police, the driver is being investigated for the following serious offences:

  • Dangerous driving causing death
  • Driving without a valid licence
  • Driving without insurance
  • Failing to stop after an accident
  • Failing to render assistance to the victim

The man could face up to eight years’ jail and disqualification from driving for causing death by dangerous driving. Additionally, each of the other offences carries heavy penalties, including fines, jail time, or both.

The passenger, who allegedly permitted the unlicensed driving, is also being investigated and may be liable for fines of up to S$10,000 or imprisonment for up to three years.

Police: Leaving the Scene Is a Crime

The Singapore Police Force issued a stern reminder that fleeing an accident scene without offering help is a criminal offence. All motorists are legally and morally obligated to stop and provide assistance—especially when someone’s life may be at risk.

“The Traffic Police will not hesitate to take firm action against motorists who choose to flout traffic laws and endanger the safety of other road users,” a police spokesperson said.

This tragic case serves as a stark reminder that irresponsible and unlawful behaviour behind the wheel can have devastating, irreversible consequences. As investigations continue, the family of the deceased is left to mourn a life lost far too suddenly.
