Two Hospitalised After Three-Vehicle Collision at City Hall Junction

A routine afternoon in Singapore’s Civic District turned tense when a three-vehicle accident unfolded at the busy intersection of North Bridge Road and Stamford Road. The collision, which involved a van, a taxi, and a silver car, resulted in two individuals being taken to hospital and police investigations now underway.

According to footage shared on the Singapore Roads Accident.com Facebook page, the incident occurred on 17 July just after noon, when a silver car rammed into the rear of a stationary ComfortDelGro taxi, which was reportedly waiting at a red traffic light.

Car Rear-Ends Taxi, Leading to Chain Collision

The dramatic dashcam footage revealed the taxi idling at the junction when the oncoming car failed to brake in time, slamming into the back of the vehicle with considerable force. The impact not only crumpled the silver car’s front bonnet but also caused the taxi to surge forward and collide with a van ahead of it.

A woman was seen stumbling out from the driver’s seat of the car moments after the crash, appearing disoriented as she approached the taxi. Both vehicles suffered visible damage, with the taxi crushed at both ends and the van sustaining minor dents.

In response to media queries, the Singapore Police Force confirmed they were alerted to the collision at 12.15pm. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) also confirmed that two individuals were conveyed to Singapore General Hospital – a 67-year-old male taxi driver and a 27-year-old female passenger from the car. Both were conscious at the time of transport.

Driver Assisting With Police Investigations

The 60-year-old female driver of the silver car is currently assisting police with investigations. Authorities have yet to disclose any potential charges, but the case raises important issues about road safety, particularly in high-traffic areas like City Hall where pedestrian and vehicle activity are dense.

Accidents at traffic junctions, especially rear-end collisions, often stem from driver distraction, fatigue, or misjudgement. Experts frequently warn that even a momentary lapse in attention can lead to severe outcomes — a point reinforced by this incident.

Renewed Emphasis on Defensive Driving & Public Safety

This latest crash highlights the continued need for vigilance on the roads, especially in the city centre where intersections like Stamford Road and North Bridge Road are bustling throughout the day. It also serves as a timely reminder of the importance of defensive driving, regular vehicle maintenance, and remaining alert even during routine drives.

With an increasing number of vehicles — from private cars and PHVs to commercial vans and taxis — sharing Singapore’s roads, ensuring safety through public education and stricter enforcement remains crucial. As investigations proceed, there is also growing public interest in whether enhanced driver testing, or more widespread use of collision avoidance technology, might help reduce the frequency of such incidents.

For now, commuters are urged to remain cautious, particularly when approaching major traffic light junctions in the CBD area.
