PRC Student Charged With Slashing Ex-GF at M’sian University, Pleads Not Guilty

A 22-year-old Chinese national studying at a private university in Subang Jaya, Malaysia, has been charged with grievous assault after allegedly slashing his ex-girlfriend with a knife on campus. The accused, identified as You Wei, appeared before the Shah Alam Sessions Court where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The shocking incident, which occurred on 14 July 2025, reportedly took place on the university’s premises in Sunway. According to prosecutors, You allegedly stabbed the victim on the left side of her neck during a confrontation. The case has since gripped public attention after disturbing footage of the attack circulated widely online.

Under Section 326 of the Malaysian Penal Code, the charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 20 years, along with possible fines or corporal punishment by whipping if convicted.

Prosecutors Argue Against Bail Due to Flight Risk

During the court hearing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal opposed granting bail, expressing concerns that the accused posed a potential flight risk, particularly given his foreign citizenship. She urged the court to consider the severity of the offence and the possible implications on public safety.

In response, defence counsel Revin Kumar appealed for leniency, stating that You was willing to comply fully with any bail conditions. The lawyer also revealed that his client had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and was undergoing medical treatment at the time of the incident.

Ultimately, Judge Norazlin Othman allowed bail at RM20,000 (approximately S$5,800) with two sureties. However, strict conditions were imposed, including the surrender of You’s passport and a monthly check-in at the nearest police station. The judge also prohibited any contact between the accused and the victim or witnesses involved in the case.

Viral Attack Leaves Campus Community in Shock

The violent assault has left the university community deeply shaken. Videos captured by witnesses showed the victim bleeding from a neck wound while other students quickly subdued the suspect. The woman was immediately rushed to University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM), where she is recovering from her injuries.

Preliminary reports suggest the attack may have stemmed from a personal dispute. Allegedly, the accused was angered by claims made by the victim that he had previously prevented her from leaving his residence. This motive, while unconfirmed in court, has been widely discussed across social media platforms.

The next court mention is scheduled for 17 September 2025, where further proceedings will determine if the case proceeds to trial.

Case Highlights Rising Concerns Over Student Mental Health and Campus Safety

The incident has sparked renewed debate over mental health support for international students, especially those grappling with emotional distress far from home. Critics are also calling for stricter campus security protocols to prevent such violent outbursts from occurring in supposedly safe academic environments.

This case is the latest in a growing list of violent incidents involving international students in Southeast Asia, raising alarms among university administrators, policymakers, and parents alike. Authorities have yet to comment on whether any action will be taken against the university for its handling of the matter.

As the legal process unfolds, the public continues to watch closely, hoping for justice for the victim while grappling with the disturbing reality of violence within educational institutions.
