M’sian Man Drinks Unwashed Canned Drink, Dies After 4 Days Due to Rat Urine Disease

Malaysian Youth Dies After Drinking Unwashed Canned Beverage Following Hike

A tragic case in Melaka has sparked concern across social media after a 23-year-old man passed away just four days after allegedly contracting leptospirosis — also known as rat urine disease — believed to have come from an unwashed canned drink consumed during a hike.

The victim, identified as Muhammad Ikmal, had reportedly gone hiking with friends and consumed a canned beverage without rinsing the surface. The next day, he began experiencing vomiting, diarrhoea, and fever. Initially diagnosed with a mild illness at a private clinic, he was sent home with fever and pain medication.

However, his condition quickly worsened. Over the next two days, his symptoms intensified, prompting his family to rush him to Melaka General Hospital. Doctors later confirmed that he was suffering from complications believed to be related to leptospirosis — a bacterial infection often linked to environments contaminated by rodent urine.

Bacteria Attacked Major Organs Within Days

According to his father, Ikmal remained conscious at first and reassured his family he could “still hold on.” Tragically, he lost consciousness soon after and was pronounced dead within hours. The infection had reportedly damaged his kidneys, lungs, nervous system, and heart in just a matter of days.

Doctors believe the infection likely entered his body when he consumed the canned drink without first washing its surface — a seemingly harmless oversight that led to fatal consequences. His family now hopes his story serves as a powerful reminder of how minor habits can have major health implications.

High-risk areas, especially those surrounded by forested zones or hiking trails, can be breeding grounds for bacteria due to wildlife presence. This incident raises awareness about the importance of basic hygiene, particularly when consuming food or drinks outdoors.

Netizens Shocked by Sudden Death

Singaporeans and Malaysians alike have expressed their sorrow and shock online. Many took to social media to share their condolences, while others highlighted their newfound fear of drinking from unclean cans — a practice many admitted to doing out of habit. Some urged authorities to run health education campaigns to promote simple but life-saving behaviours.

This incident also brings into focus how important it is to have access to affordable healthcare and proper medical coverage. Infections like leptospirosis, while rare, can progress rapidly and require immediate hospitalisation. As such, having a reliable health insurance plan could make a difference, especially in emergency cases involving hospital stays and specialist care.

The father of the deceased has since taken to social media to urge the public not to overlook daily hygiene practices. His heartfelt plea — to wash all canned drinks before consumption — has gone viral, with thousands sharing the post across platforms in hopes of preventing similar tragedies.
