Tanjong Katong Road South Collapses: One Sent to Hospital After Car Plunges Into Sinkhole

A shocking road collapse occurred along Tanjong Katong Road South on Saturday evening (26 July), leaving a car submerged in a water-filled sinkhole and one person hospitalised. Authorities have since cordoned off the affected area, as investigations are underway to determine the cause of the incident.

Black Sedan Falls Into Gaping Hole, Eyewitnesses Stunned

The collapse happened at about 5:50pm near the junction close to One Amber condominium. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed it was alerted to the incident and responded quickly, transporting one individual to hospital. The person’s condition has not been publicly disclosed at this time.

Images and videos shared widely on social media show a black sedan nearly submerged in a massive crater, with only the rear visible above the waterline. A crowd of onlookers can be seen gathering nearby, and traffic congestion quickly built up along the affected road.

Eyewitnesses reported that the collapse seemed sudden and that construction activity was taking place in the vicinity prior to the incident. Footage also revealed a strong water flow from the sinkhole, suggesting a possible underground pipe burst contributed to the collapse.

Emergency Works Underway, Authorities Launch Investigation

Police and emergency personnel swiftly closed off the area to prevent further accidents, setting up safety cones and redirecting traffic. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Public Utilities Board (PUB) are both investigating the incident, which has raised public safety concerns about ongoing construction and underground infrastructure integrity.

Member of Parliament for Marine Parade–Braddell Heights GRC, Goh Pei Ming, shared on Facebook that both agencies are actively assessing the site. In the meantime, bus services 36 and 48 have been rerouted due to the partial road closure.

Infrastructure Concerns Resurface Amidst Wet Weather and Construction Boom

While road collapses are rare in Singapore, they do occasionally happen due to factors like underground erosion, broken water mains, or nearby tunnelling activity. This latest incident has triggered renewed debate on the risks associated with rapid urban redevelopment and ageing water pipes.

Tanjong Katong Road South is a key route in the east, often congested during peak hours. Saturday’s cave-in not only disrupted traffic but also raised anxiety among residents who fear more incidents if preventive checks are not intensified.

Authorities have yet to provide a timeline for full restoration, and motorists are advised to avoid the area until further notice.
