Illegal contraband hidden in Malaysia-registered car
Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) recently intercepted a major smuggling attempt at Woodlands Checkpoint, uncovering a stash of prohibited e-vaporisers and heat-not-burn tobacco products hidden inside a Malaysia-registered vehicle.
On 24 July 2025, alert ICA officers flagged the vehicle for further inspection during a routine checkpoint operation. What initially appeared to be a standard entry turned into a full-scale contraband bust after officers uncovered more than 5,900 units of e-vaporisers and accessories, along with 150 cartons of heatsticks cleverly concealed within multiple compartments of the car.
Items seized for further investigation

The seized items, which are prohibited under Singapore’s strict anti-vaping laws, were swiftly handed over to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) for further investigation. The importation, sale and possession of e-vaporisers and related components are strictly regulated in Singapore. Offenders can face hefty penalties, including fines of up to S$10,000, imprisonment of up to 6 months, or both, even for first-time offences.
According to ICA, this case underscores the ongoing vigilance required to combat illegal smuggling activities at Singapore’s land checkpoints. The use of concealment tactics, such as hiding contraband in vehicle panels and storage areas, is a known method used by smugglers hoping to evade detection.
Singapore remains firm on e-vaporiser ban

Despite the popularity of vaping products in other countries, Singapore has taken a firm stance against the import and sale of e-cigarettes and similar devices. Authorities continue to warn that there is zero tolerance for smuggling or possession of these banned items, citing public health concerns and the risk of abuse, especially among youth.
ICA reiterated in their statement that they remain committed to their mission as “Guardians of Our Borders,” ensuring the safe flow of people and goods while keeping harmful products out of Singapore.
Travellers are reminded not to bring any prohibited items into the country. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and all vehicles entering Singapore are subject to thorough checks at the discretion of checkpoint officers.
Singapore’s strict enforcement and high penalty regime serve as a strong deterrent against such illicit activities.
Stay safe, travel smart — and don’t take chances at the checkpoint.
