PYTHON AT BLK 145 TECK WHYE FOOD COURT, CROWD GATHERS AND CATCHES IT

Python Spotted at Teck Whye Food Court, Captured by Public

A surprising encounter unfolded at Block 145 Teck Whye Avenue when a large python slithered into the neighbourhood food court, sparking alarm and curiosity among diners. The incident, which took place in the late afternoon, saw a crowd quickly forming as the reptile was spotted near a drain beside one of the stalls.

According to eyewitnesses, the snake measured over two metres in length and appeared to be searching for shelter. “At first I thought it was just a big hose, but then it moved,” said Mr Lim, a stall assistant. “Everyone started shouting and taking videos. Some ran away, some came closer.”

The unexpected visitor caused a brief stir among hawkers and customers, with some tables abandoned mid-meal. Fortunately, no one was injured in the encounter.

Quick Action by Residents

Several men from the nearby coffee shop stepped forward to contain the snake. Using makeshift tools such as a broomstick and a large bucket, they managed to guide the python away from the crowded seating area. Onlookers cheered as the reptile was eventually cornered near a pillar.

One of the men, who identified himself as Ah Seng, said he had handled snakes before during his time in National Service. “I knew we had to be careful — pythons are not venomous, but they can still bite or constrict. We tried to keep it calm until help arrived.”

The group managed to secure the snake without harming it, placing it in a covered container while awaiting further assistance.

Authorities Alerted and Snake Relocated

The Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (ACRES) was notified and arrived at the scene shortly after. The python was safely collected and later released into a suitable natural habitat away from residential areas.

Wildlife experts remind the public that pythons are a protected species in Singapore and play an important role in controlling pest populations. However, they caution against attempting to handle wild snakes without proper training, urging residents to contact authorities immediately.

This unusual encounter serves as a reminder that wildlife sightings in urban Singapore are becoming more common as natural habitats overlap with human spaces. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and exercise caution when faced with such situations.
