Blood Moon to Light Up the Skies on 7 September: What You Need to Know About the Total Lunar Eclipse

Skywatchers across Singapore and much of the world are in for a rare celestial spectacle next month as a dramatic total lunar eclipse, often referred to as a “blood moon”, takes place on 7 September 2025. During the event, the moon will pass through Earth’s shadow, taking on a striking reddish hue that has captivated cultures and astronomers for centuries.

According to astronomical forecasts, this will be the second total lunar eclipse of the year, with up to 77 per cent of the world’s population able to witness at least part of the phenomenon. For viewers in Asia, including Singapore, as well as Western Australia, the entire eclipse will be visible from start to finish — offering an ideal vantage point.

Global Viewing Times and Best Locations

The lunar eclipse will occur between 15:28 and 20:55 GMT, with totality — the period when the moon is completely immersed in Earth’s umbra — lasting 82 minutes from 17:30 to 18:52 GMT. For residents in Singapore, this translates into a prime-time evening show, weather permitting.

Other cities will also enjoy spectacular views. In Mumbai, the blood moon will appear from 11:00 p.m. IST on 7 September to 12:22 a.m. the next day. In Cape Town, the moon will glow red from 7:30 p.m. to 8:52 p.m. SAST. In Europe, however, the moon will rise already in eclipse, making the timing of moonrise crucial for those hoping to catch the full effect.

What to Expect During the Blood Moon

Unlike ordinary full moons, this eclipse occurs just days before the moon reaches its closest point to Earth, making it appear slightly larger in the night sky. Roughly 36 per cent of the moon’s diameter will pass through the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, creating a rich, coppery-red glow. This eerie transformation happens because sunlight bends through Earth’s atmosphere, scattering blue light and leaving only the red tones to illuminate the lunar surface.

Astronomy experts encourage stargazers to head outdoors at least an hour before totality to enjoy the gradual darkening as the eclipse progresses, and to stay after the peak for the moon’s slow return to brightness. Those unable to see the event in person will still be able to tune in via several livestreams, ensuring nobody misses out on one of the year’s most stunning astronomical displays.

A Celestial Event Not to Be Missed

For astronomy enthusiasts and casual observers alike, the 7 September blood moon promises to be an unforgettable experience. With such wide visibility across the globe, billions will be able to share the same sky-gazing moment, reinforcing the timeless wonder of the cosmos.
