Mercedes Drives Onto Pedestrian Walkway in Singapore CBD, Stuns Onlookers

A Mercedes driver in Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD) shocked pedestrians when the vehicle unexpectedly turned onto a walkway outside the OCBC building. The unusual incident, which occurred on 19 August at around 3:45pm, was captured on dashboard camera footage and has since made its rounds online.

The video showed the car travelling along Chulia Street before making a left turn into Philip Street. Instead of continuing on the road, the driver hesitated briefly before steering the car onto the pedestrian path — an area clearly meant for foot traffic, not vehicles.

Pedestrians Caught Off Guard

At least six people were using the walkway at the time. One man dressed in white appeared visibly confused by the sight of the luxury car cruising along the path. Another man in blue, walking behind the vehicle, turned his head twice as if to double-check whether he had really seen a car on the walkway.

Fortunately, no pedestrians were hurt. The walkway, which slopes towards a drop-off point at the OCBC building, allowed the Mercedes to exit without reversing. Onlookers were left baffled, though, as the driver’s decision posed potential danger to those nearby.

Possible Wrong Turn to Blame

A likely explanation, according to reports, is that the driver intended to head to the building’s drop-off point located about 100 metres ahead. However, after turning left too early into Philip Street, the driver may have found themselves unable to reverse out due to another vehicle directly behind.

This led to the ill-judged choice of continuing forward — straight onto the pedestrian walkway. While no accidents occurred, the incident has raised questions about road safety and driver awareness in Singapore’s busy CBD, where both cars and pedestrians often share tight spaces.

Authorities have not released details on whether the driver will face penalties, but road users have reminded one another that walkways are strictly off-limits to vehicles. In Singapore, driving on pedestrian paths without authorisation can lead to fines, demerit points, or prosecution.
