The FBI has intensified efforts in its investigation into the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, releasing images of a person of interest and offering a substantial reward for information. Kirk, 31, was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University on 10 September.
The FBI’s Salt Lake City office published photos on social media showing an individual wearing a cap and sunglasses inside a stairwell. Authorities have described the suspect as possibly college-aged and are appealing for public assistance in identifying him. A reward of up to US$100,000 (about S$128,155) has been announced for any tip-off that leads to the suspect’s arrest.
Rifle and evidence recovered
Investigators revealed that a rifle believed to be the murder weapon was recovered in a wooded area near the suspect’s escape route. The weapon, identified as an older model imported Mauser .30-06 bolt-action rifle, was found wrapped in a towel. Forensic teams are analysing the firearm along with a spent cartridge still in the chamber and three unused rounds. Authorities disclosed that the cartridges carried markings with phrases linked to “transgender and anti-fascist” themes, though investigators are considering whether this could be a deliberate attempt to mislead.
In addition to the rifle, FBI officers collected footwear impressions, a palm print and forearm imprints for laboratory analysis. Officials say they also have strong video footage tracking the suspect’s movements before and after the incident.
Timeline of the shooting and ongoing manhunt
According to Utah’s Department of Public Safety, the suspect entered the Orem campus stairwell shortly before noon and reached the roof of a building overlooking the outdoor event. At around 12:20pm, Kirk was struck in the neck by a single bullet. Despite being rushed to hospital, he did not survive.
The gunman then fled across the building, jumped off and escaped into a nearby neighbourhood. Authorities believe he travelled on foot, and a large-scale manhunt is underway. The FBI has urged the public to share any photos, videos or information that could help identify the suspect.
Kirk, founder of the Arizona-based organisation Turning Point USA, was a prominent conservative figure. His remains are expected to be flown from Utah to Arizona on Air Force Two, reflecting his national significance.
The investigation remains ongoing as federal authorities continue to pursue leads while reinforcing calls for public cooperation.
