More Thundery Showers Expected in Singapore for Second Half of September 2025

Singaporeans can expect wetter days ahead, as the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) has forecast widespread thundery showers and gusty winds in the coming weeks. The weather agency said on 16 September that the second half of the month will see increased rainfall due to persisting Southwest Monsoon conditions affecting the region.

According to MSS, winds will generally blow from the southeast or southwest, with Sumatra squalls expected to sweep across the island on several days. These squalls, which usually develop overnight over Sumatra before moving eastwards, are likely to bring heavy downpours and strong gusts during the pre-dawn and morning hours. Short-lived thunderstorms are also expected in the afternoons, although a few dry days may still occur.

Daily temperatures are forecast to hover between 24°C and 33°C. On some hotter days, maximum temperatures could exceed 34°C, despite the frequent rainfall. Overall, total rainfall for the second half of September is projected to be near the island’s long-term average.

Wetter First Half of September

The first half of September was already wetter than usual, with several days of intense thunderstorms. The Sarimbun Reservoir area recorded the highest daily total at 102.6mm on 5 September, after a strong morning squall drenched much of Singapore.

MSS reported that Seletar experienced 248 per cent above-average rainfall, while Paya Lebar recorded 73 per cent above the norm. The wet weather also brought cooler conditions, with four days registering maximum temperatures below 30°C. The highest daily maximum of the fortnight was 33.8°C, observed at Admiralty on 3 September.

Despite the rainfall, monsoon winds remained consistent, blowing mainly from the southeast and southwest. The overall climate pattern suggests that residents should be prepared for more unsettled weather going into the later part of the month.

What Residents Should Expect

With frequent thundery showers and gusty winds on the way, commuters should anticipate delays during morning travel hours. Motorists are advised to drive cautiously, especially during heavy downpours that reduce visibility. Outdoor events and sports may also face disruptions due to sudden storms.

The coming weeks highlight the importance of being prepared for unpredictable tropical weather, whether it is carrying an umbrella for daily commutes or ensuring proper drainage around homes to minimise flash flood risks. For businesses, particularly those in logistics and construction, factoring in wet weather delays will also be key to staying on schedule.
