AMOS YEE ADDRESSES SG GOVT IN BLOG POST, SAYS HE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO RETURN

A new blog post attributed to Singaporean Amos Yee has surfaced online, in which the 27-year-old directly addresses the Singapore government and argues that he should not be permitted to return to the country. The post, dated early February, adopts a confrontational tone and outlines his reasons for opposing deportation back to Singapore.

The post was published on a blog bearing Yee’s name, which is reportedly managed by individuals linked to him. It comes as Yee remains in immigration custody in the United States, where he is facing deportation proceedings following a series of legal issues over the past decade.

In the post, Yee claims that returning to Singapore would inevitably result in further imprisonment due to his failure to fulfil national service obligations. He framed his situation as a political and legal standoff, suggesting that his deportation would create complications for the authorities.

IMMIGRATION STATUS AND DEPORTATION OUTLOOK

According to information shared on the blog, Yee is currently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a correctional facility in Indiana. He is expected to appear before an immigration court in the coming days as part of his ongoing deportation case.

In his writing, Yee suggested that the only way to avoid being sent back to Singapore would be for the authorities to refuse to issue travel documents. He argued that this could potentially result in deportation to a third country or lead to his release from U.S. immigration custody after a prolonged detention period.

The blog post also contained inflammatory remarks directed at Singapore’s political opposition, as well as bold claims about his own political influence. Yee alleged that he could destabilise the Singapore government if he chose to do so, framing himself as a disruptive force rather than a returning offender.

PAST CONTROVERSIES AND LEGAL HISTORY

Yee first drew public attention in 2016 when he left Singapore a day before a scheduled pre-enlistment medical examination for national service. He later obtained asylum in the United States, citing political persecution.

However, his time overseas has been marked by serious criminal convictions. In 2021, Yee was sentenced to jail in the U.S. for sexually grooming a minor. Although he was granted parole in later years, he was returned to custody and subsequently detained again by immigration authorities.

He is reportedly the only Singaporean listed on ICE’s internal high-risk category, underscoring the severity of his legal standing in the U.S.

POSITION OF SINGAPORE AUTHORITIES

Singapore’s Ministry of Defence has previously stated that Yee committed offences under the Enlistment Act, including failing to attend compulsory medical screening and remaining overseas without a valid Exit Permit. The ministry has reiterated that he will be charged should he return to Singapore.

As Yee’s immigration case unfolds, his latest blog post has reignited debate around national service enforcement, immigration law and public safety. The situation continues to attract attention both locally and abroad, particularly as questions surrounding deportation, legal accountability and national security remain unresolved.
