EARTHQUAKE GRAB RIDE, DRIVER DRIVES WITH BOTAK PUNCTURED WHEEL, SUSPENDED

Grab Driver Suspended After Continuing Journey Despite Burst Tyre, Passenger Says Ride Felt “Like An Earthquake”

A Grab passenger has spoken out after experiencing what she described as a frightening ride when the car she was in allegedly continued moving despite suffering a burst tyre.

The incident, which was later shared on TikTok, quickly gained traction online after the passenger compared the journey to an “earthquake simulator”. The woman said the vehicle began shaking violently and producing loud noises midway through the trip.

In response to media queries, Grab confirmed that the driver involved has since been suspended from the platform pending further review.

Passenger Claims Tyre Had Completely Torn Apart

The woman said the incident occurred sometime between 1pm and 2pm on Feb. 5 while she was travelling via a GrabHitch ride. She initially sensed something was wrong when the vehicle started vibrating noticeably, but the driver appeared calm and continued driving.

According to her account, the situation worsened as the journey progressed. The driver then asked whether she would be agreeable to taking a detour to have the tyre replaced.

Uncomfortable with the delay and concerned for her safety, she requested to be dropped off at a nearby bus stop instead. After exiting the vehicle, she noticed the tyre was severely damaged. She claimed that the rubber portion appeared to have been stripped away, exposing metal components.

The passenger added that the episode disrupted her plans for the day. As she had paid for the ride in cash, she later contacted Grab to request a refund.

Platform Reiterates Safety Standards

Grab stated that it has reached out to the passenger and will be providing a full refund. The company added that the driver’s account will only be considered for reinstatement after the vehicle undergoes professional inspection and necessary rectification.

In its statement, Grab reiterated that safety remains its top priority and reminded drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and compliant with platform guidelines as well as local regulatory requirements before accepting bookings.

The case has once again highlighted broader concerns around vehicle maintenance in the private hire sector. Tyre blowouts can pose serious safety risks, especially if drivers continue operating a vehicle in a compromised condition.

Passengers are encouraged to report any ride-related concerns through the in-app Help Centre so that prompt investigations can be conducted. As Singapore’s ride-hailing industry continues to grow, maintaining high safety standards remains critical to public trust and commuter confidence.
