Pregnant Woman’s Pay Slashed 20% Before Maternity, Husband Says Boss Trying To Cheat

A Reddit post about a pregnant permanent resident allegedly facing a sudden 20 per cent salary deduction has ignited widespread debate online, with many Singaporeans urging the couple to escalate the matter to the authorities.

The post, published on the subreddit r/singaporespeaks, was shared by user Reddit member “tikoshin”, who described himself as a Singapore citizen. He claimed that his wife, a PR who is due to deliver their Singaporean baby at the end of March, had her pay reduced by more than 20 per cent last month. According to the post, her employer cited “performance issues” as justification.

The couple are reportedly seeking assistance from their union and are considering filing a complaint with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). The case has sparked strong reactions, particularly given the timing of the deduction ahead of maternity leave.

Questions Raised Over Legality Of Pay Cut

Many commenters questioned whether an employer can unilaterally reduce salary based solely on performance concerns. Under Singapore’s Employment Act, salary deductions are tightly regulated, and employers cannot arbitrarily dock wages unless specific conditions are met and clearly stated in the employment contract.

Several users advised the poster to preserve all documentary evidence, including past performance appraisals, written testimonials, WhatsApp messages and emails. According to the post, the wife allegedly has positive past records and screenshots of favourable feedback. The husband also claimed that the employer previously indicated there would be a pay increment before reversing course after learning of the pregnancy.

More alarmingly, he alleged that the boss had suggested the salary might be reinstated if his wife assured management she would not take medical leave before maternity leave begins. Commenters described that claim as particularly troubling, with some urging immediate escalation to MOM or the Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management (TADM).

Maternity Protection And Workplace Discrimination

Singapore’s employment framework includes safeguards for pregnant employees, and wrongful dismissal or discriminatory treatment linked to pregnancy can carry serious consequences. While companies retain discretion over performance management and restructuring, unilateral salary cuts without contractual basis may constitute a breach of employment terms.

Online reactions reflected broader anxieties about what some described as the “motherhood penalty” in workplaces. Others took a more pragmatic stance, advising the wife to complete her maternity leave benefits before exploring new employment opportunities, especially if trust with management has deteriorated.

At the time of writing, there is no indication that a formal complaint has been filed. However, the viral thread has reignited discussion about workplace rights, employment contract protections and fair labour practices in Singapore’s SME sector. As economic pressures mount across industries, experts continue to stress the importance of clear documentation, transparent HR processes and compliance with employment law to prevent costly disputes and reputational damage.
