BAGS SLASHED IN BANGKOK CHINATOWN, LOCAL THAI WOMAN WARNS OF PICKPOCKETS

Thai Woman Sounds Alarm After Designer Bag Slashed In Bangkok’s Chinatown

A Thai woman has taken to social media to warn the public after her handbag was cut open in a suspected theft attempt along Yaowarat Road, one of the busiest stretches in the capital.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday, February 16, during the crowded festive period around Chinese New Year. The woman later shared a video on Instagram showing herself and a friend visibly shaken as she revealed a long slash running down the side of her light brown Longchamp handbag. Despite the damage, most of her belongings appeared to remain inside.

She explained that she had visited an ATM in the area intending to withdraw cash for street food purchases. After realising she already had sufficient notes in her bag, she decided against taking out more money and walked away from the machine.

Shortly afterwards, she said someone bumped into her forcefully from behind. Given the heavy foot traffic typical of Chinatown during peak celebrations, she initially dismissed it as an accidental knock.

Realisation Came Moments After ATM Visit

It was only when she attempted to place her mobile phone into her handbag that she noticed the cut and understood that someone had likely targeted her. Fortunately, she had kept her phone in her trouser pocket at the time, and part of her cash was being carried by a friend.

While she did not disclose the exact amount lost, she indicated that the financial damage was limited. Instead, she expressed greater frustration over the bag itself being ruined.

The woman later confirmed she lodged a formal complaint at Phlap Phla Chai 2 Police Station. Officers reportedly assured her that the case would be investigated and that efforts would be made to identify the suspect.

Previous Pickpocketing Case Raises Concerns

This is not the first reported theft near Bangkok’s Chinatown. In December last year, CCTV footage captured three women allegedly pickpocketing a foreign visitor on Songwat Road, a nearby street known for its historic shophouses and wholesale trade. Although a police report was filed in that case, there has been no public confirmation of arrests.

Yaowarat Road is famed for its vibrant street food scene, gold shops and cultural landmarks, drawing both locals and tourists daily. However, the combination of dense crowds and distracted visitors can create opportunities for opportunistic criminals.

Security experts frequently advise travellers to use anti-theft bags, avoid displaying large sums of cash, and remain alert after withdrawing money from ATMs — particularly in high-traffic tourist districts. As Bangkok continues to see strong visitor numbers, personal safety awareness remains an essential part of navigating the city’s most popular attractions.
