A man’s reckless stunt at a Thai zoo has landed him in police custody after he was caught entering the enclosure of a viral baby hippo, raising concerns over animal safety and visitor conduct.
THAILAND – A man has been arrested after trespassing into an animal enclosure at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, where the widely followed pygmy hippo known as Moo Deng is housed.
The incident reportedly took place in the early evening, when images circulating online showed an individual climbing into the restricted area. Zoo authorities later confirmed that the intruder was quickly apprehended by on-site security personnel before being handed over to the police.
Moo Deng, a pygmy hippo that gained global attention shortly after birth, was not physically harmed. However, zoo officials noted that the animals may have experienced mild stress due to the unexpected intrusion.
Viral Hippo Unharmed But Monitored Closely
The zoo reassured the public that both Moo Deng and other hippos in the enclosure remained safe following the incident. Veterinary staff are continuing to observe their behaviour as a precaution.
Footage from a live stream of the enclosure showed the man entering the habitat and approaching the animals while holding what appeared to be a tablet device. He was seen attempting to get closer to one of the hippos before hesitating and pulling back.
After spending slightly more than a minute inside, he exited the enclosure with assistance from another individual positioned outside the barrier.
Social Media Fame Draws Risky Behaviour
Moo Deng, whose name translates to “bouncy pork” in Thai, became an internet sensation shortly after being born in July 2024. The animal’s popularity surged globally, even appearing in pop culture references such as a comedy sketch on Saturday Night Live.
The attention has driven increased visitor interest, but the latest incident highlights the risks posed when individuals attempt to get too close to wildlife for social media content or personal footage.
Zoo authorities stressed that safety barriers are in place to protect both animals and visitors, and breaching them can lead to serious consequences.
