The incident allegedly took place at Aston Club Southkey, a nightlife venue located in Johor Bahru’s Southkey district. Authorities stated that the altercation occurred at around 5:30am on March 14, during which the victim was reportedly attacked with a sharp weapon and stabbed in the neck, reported The Star

The charge falls under Section 302 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which carries severe penalties upon conviction. If found guilty, the accused could face the death penalty, or alternatively, life imprisonment of up to 40 years along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

Malaysian authorities have also revealed that at least six individuals were arrested in connection with the incident as investigations continue.

VICTIM SUCCUMBED TO INJURIES AFTER HOSPITALISATION

Following the attack, Chia was rushed to Hospital Sultan Ismail in Taman Mount Austin. Despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.

Preliminary reports indicate that the victim had suffered a critical stab wound to the neck, which ultimately proved fatal.

In a related development, another Singaporean man, Shahid Nazareen Shah Phul Bahar Hussain, 33, was fined RM1,700 (approximately S$542) for his involvement in a separate assault linked to the same night.

According to court documents, Shahid had punched another individual in the eye during an earlier altercation at the same nightclub around 4:30am. The victim was reportedly a friend of the deceased, and investigations found that the individuals involved did not know each other prior to the incident.

HEIGHTENED CONCERNS OVER CROSS-BORDER NIGHTLIFE INCIDENTS

The case has drawn attention to safety concerns involving Singaporeans travelling to Johor Bahru for nightlife activities, particularly in popular entertainment districts.

While investigations are still ongoing, authorities are expected to establish the sequence of events leading up to the fatal confrontation, including whether alcohol or other factors played a role.

The outcome of the forensic reports and subsequent court proceedings will be critical in determining the final charges and potential sentencing in what has become a high-profile cross-border criminal case.
