Why our Dental fees so daylight robbery? 💸🦷
Is it just me or is the dental situation in Singapore getting ridiculous?
Recently had a persistent toothache, went to a private clinic. Doctor takes one look, does an X-ray, and says “Root Canal needed.” Then he drops the bomb: $1,800 to $2,500++ depending on the crown material. Simi lanjiao? That’s literally one month’s salary for some people just to save one tooth.
The Polyclinic “Experience”
Since I didn’t want to sell my kidney, I tried the Polyclinic route. Big mistake.
- The Wait: Had to camp on the app like I’m buying Taylor Swift tickets just to get a slot.
- The Vibe: When I finally got in, the dentist looked like he just graduated yesterday. Super jittery, kept asking the senior for help.
- The Service: Not saying they are “bad,” but it felt like a factory line. Very “touch and go.” They told me they can only do the basic stuff and for complex cases, the referral wait time is months. Who can wait months for a root canal? The pain will kill me first.
The JB “Revelation”
In the end, my uncle told me to just “go across the bridge.” I was skeptical because I heard horror stories, but I was desperate. Went to a reputable clinic in JB (near City Square).
The Difference is Day and Night:
- The Price: Everything—Root Canal + Permanent Crown—came up to about RM 2,500. Convert back to SGD? That’s roughly $750. I saved more than $1,000+ even after factoring in the petrol and the 3-hour Causeway jam.
- Professionalism: The dentist there was a specialist. Very experienced, steady hands, and explained every single step using the digital scan on the monitor. I actually felt safer there than with the “intern” vibe at the Polyclinic.
- Equipments: Their clinic looked like a spaceship. High-tech giler. Even the local private clinics I went to didn’t have that kind of setup.
The Sad Reality
Why is it that we pay “First World” prices in SG but if we want affordable healthcare, we get “training school” standards? If you go private, you get “conned” by the markup.
Honestly, if you have dental issues, just suck it up and endure the Causeway jam. Even if you factor in a nice seafood dinner in JB after your appointment, you still win big time.
Anyone else feel that SG dental is just legalized robbery now?
TL;DR: SG private dentist quoted $2k+, Polyclinic was a joke/wait was too long. Went JB, settled everything for $700+ with better service. Don’t be a carrot in Singapore.
