My GF is actually gatekeeping my career because of “Office Ladies” in CBD… help?
Throwaway account for obvious reasons.
Is this the peak of Singaporean relationship insecurity or am I just dreaming? I just got a solid job offer for an Manager role. Pay is good, career growth is there, everything is steady. The only “problem”? The office is located right in the heart of Raffles Place.
When I told my girlfriend, I thought she’d be happy for me. Instead, she legit told me I cannot take the job. Why? Because according to her, Raffles Place has “too many beautiful office ladies (OLs).”
She’s dead serious. She says the girls there all dress up like they’re walking a runway, always in high heels, Zara office wear, and looking sharp. She’s convinced that if I work there, my eyes will wander or some “chiobu” from a law firm or bank will somehow lure me away during lunch at Lau Pa Sat.
I tried to tell her:
- I’m there to work, not to join a dating show.
- Every major hub like Tanjong Pagar or Marina Bay also has OLs. Does she want me to work in a warehouse in Tuas instead?
- It’s Raffles Place… everyone is either rushing to a meeting or looking stressed about their KPIs. Nobody has time for K-drama moments in the lift.
I’m 37 this year, not some 19-year-old boy. I’ve worked hard to get my career to this level, but now I’m being told to reject a good opportunity because of “distractions” in the CBD.
Anyone else dealt with this kind of logic? How do I even convince her that I’m only interested in the increment and the CPF, not the fashion parade at Chevron House? I love her, but this is getting ridiculous.
TL;DR: Got a job at Raffles Place, GF says no because she’s scared of the “pretty OLs” there. Should I just buy a hi-vis vest and work in the offshore islands to make her feel safe?
