A shocking incident unfolded at one of Japan’s busiest pedestrian crossings after a man allegedly set fire to part of the iconic junction before calmly surrendering himself to authorities shortly after.
Fire breaks out at Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo
The incident took place at the world-famous Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, a location known for its massive pedestrian traffic and bright neon skyline.
According to local reports, the fire was ignited shortly after 9pm when an individual allegedly poured petrol from a plastic container onto the ground before setting it alight using a lighter. The blaze quickly spread across a small section of the crossing, covering roughly one square metre.
Witnesses described a tense but controlled scene, with smoke rising from the middle of the intersection as passers-by looked on. Police officers who were nearby responded swiftly, using fire extinguishers to contain and put out the flames before the situation escalated further.
Despite the alarming nature of the act, no injuries were reported, and the fire was successfully extinguished within minutes.

In an unexpected turn of events, the suspected perpetrator walked into a nearby police station just 20 minutes after the incident and admitted responsibility.
Authorities identified the individual as a man in his 50s who reportedly resides in Nagoya. He also claimed to work as a painter, though further details about his background have not been disclosed.
Investigators revealed that a piece of cardboard bearing a written message was left behind at the scene, suggesting the act may have been premeditated. However, the contents of the message have not yet been made public.
Police are continuing their investigations to determine the motive behind the act, including whether it was intended as a protest, a personal statement, or something more serious.
Authorities probe motive behind unusual act
The incident has raised concerns over public safety in high-traffic urban areas, particularly in globally recognised landmarks like Shibuya Crossing, which sees thousands of pedestrians cross at every light change.
Security experts note that while the fire was relatively small and quickly contained, the method used — involving flammable liquid in a crowded space — could have led to far more severe consequences.
Japanese authorities are expected to review surveillance footage and interview the suspect in detail as part of their ongoing investigation.
For now, the situation remains under control, but the unusual nature of the act has left both locals and observers questioning what could have driven such behaviour in one of the busiest intersections in the world.
